Player Focus: Allen McGaha
by Pat Benninger
July 1, 2007

There are many underrated and overlooked players throughout the state of Illinois.  It is very hard for guards to get recognition as there are so many talented ones.  One of the players who fits the mold of this type of player is Chicago Foreman’s Allen McGaha.

McGaha is a 6’3” 170 lbs class of 2008 guard that attends Chicago Foreman High School.  He is quick with a very solid handle and gets to the basket well.  He has the ability to create for himself and others and has a very solid mid range game.  He has long arms and is a hard worker on the floor with Division I talent.  He is more of a point guard but has the ability to play either guard role.

MidStateHoops.com first discovered Allen at last year’s Final Run Showcase (which will be August 11, 2007 this year).  He was one of the many to have breakout performances.  He was easily the most impressive junior on this day on a level that featured many other collegiate prospects.  We had this to say about him.

“A tall guard with a smooth, all-purpose game.  McGaha is a solid ball handler that scores best when attacking the basket.  He’s fast and aggressive yet he still manages to play under control.  Due to his confident style of play, he draws comparisons to New York style point guards.  On the defensive end, Allen’s play is strong.  He is also a good rebounder, considering his position.  McGaha tends to settle for the jumpshot too often.  However, he has a solid midrange floater.  He also initiates contact well and draws a lot of fouls, allowing him to get to the free throw line.  Strength is a component that McGaha needs to improve on.  One of the top juniors throughout the state of Illinois.”

On the high school level, Allen teams with super-sophomores Lavonty Dority and Mike McCall.  They will form one of the top backcourt combinations next season.

College coaches need to keep an eye of for Allen.  For some odd reason or another, he has been overlooked.  He would be great at the mid major level and will be a pleasant surprise for whatever school eventually gets him!
