Walker Makes Early Decisions
by Pat Benninger
August 28, 2007

Steve Walker of Chicago Simeon is the second class of 2009 Illinois prep star to give his verbal commitment to a collegiate institution so far.  The 6’6” power forward has decided to end the recruiting process early as he recently verbally committed to new head coach Ricardo Patton and Northern Illinois University.

Walker, who weighs in a 275 lbs, spent his first season and a half at half at Thornwood High School playing varsity under Bob Curran before transferring to Simeon Career Academy.  He’s a deceptively athletic post that rebounds well and is a good low block scorer.  He has consistently shedded pounds allowing him to move better while on the floor.

This past week, Illinois Stars head coach Troy Johnson informed us that the Huskies offered a scholarship to Steve this past summer.  It was his only official scholarship offer though he was seeing interest from schools of all Division I levels.  Chances are he would have garnered more scholarship offers had he have waited to commit but he was impressed with the coaches, the program, the campus, and all that the school had to offer and was content with the situation.

During the summer, Walker bounced around on AAU teams including Illinois Stars, Chicago Express, and Illinois Bobcats.  However, he was most consistently seen with the Stars.
