Illinois Standouts Doing Well At Brewster
by Pat Benninger
October 16, 2007

Brewster Academy has been the home of a number of former Illinois prep standouts.  Blake Schilb, Michael Binns, Dodie Dunson, and Andre Walker are just a few of the names that walked the Wolfeboro, New Hampshire campus in the past.  All ended up at Division I schools and played (or will play) big time roles.  This year will be no different.  Trey Blue and Kellan Thornton, but members of the state of Illinois' 2007 class are currently attending the prep school powerhouse.

Blue, a 6'3" 190 lbs shooting guard, attended Thornwood High School for three seasons while attending Chicago Julian as a sophomore.  His junior year he helped lead Thornwood to a 4th place finish in the 2006 Class AA state tournament.  He was also a 4.0 student and a four year starter in baseball.  Out of high school he garnered basketball five basketball scholarship offers but wanted to further his education at a prep school before heading to college.  This has helped Trey has gotten more interest from other colleges.

Trey Blue will take an official visit to Drake University this weekend and to Northern Iowa the following weekend,” said Brewster head coach Jason Smith.  “He is also hearing from Ohio, St. Louis, Rhode Island, Colgate, Howard, Ball State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Loyola-Chicago.”

Thornton stands 6’8” 200 lbs.  The forward was very underrated while at Hillcrest High School but has seen his stock soar since he’s moved east.

Kellen Thornton has not scheduled any official visits yet, but is receiving serious interest from Evansville, Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Fordham, St. Louis, Boston University, Ball State, Loyola-Chicago and Temple.”

Both Blue and Thornton should be big time contributors for the Bobcats this season.

“Trey and Kellen are playing very well in Open Gym.  Both will be key components to our team this year.  I expect them both to be in our top 7 man rotation.  We start practice in a few weeks.”

The guard dominated team already features five players who have given verbal commitments.  Their big time player is Emmanual Negedu, a top 25 national recruited committed to Arizona.  He’s been in the program for some years now and is touted as the player who will be “the best to ever come out of Brewster.”  They also feature Anthony Crater (Ohio State), Mark Lyons (Xavier), Max Huc (Princeton), and Charles Abouo (Brigham Young).

Look for Coach Smith and his Bobcats to lead yet another successful season.
